Causes of Back Pain and Prevention

Back pain is one of the most popular ailment in the world. Research has shown that at least 90% of people suffer from backache at least once in their life. 

Back pain could either be chronic or acute. Acute back pains are minor back pains that last no more than 6 weeks while in chronic back pain, it can last for over 2 months.

Some of the common causes of back pain include: 

  1. Muscle strain

One of the most common causes of back pain is muscle strain. Constant lifting or carrying of heavy objects can strain the muscles and ligaments, resulting in back pain. Sudden uncomfortable/awkward movements can also cause back pain. 

Another cause of muscle strain is bad posture. Slouching and other poor body postures will strain the muscles in the back and can result in muscle spasms. Adopting a good posture can help prevent back pain.

  1. Bulging disks

Another major cause of chronic backache is ruptured or bulging disks. Disks can be found in between the bones in the spine. Their purpose is to serve as pillows between the bones. If the soft components of a disk rupture or bulge, it can prick a nerve. This often results in back pain. There are some scenarios, though when a disk ruptures but does not trigger back pain. 


  1. Arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammation in the joint. Major symptoms of arthritis include stiffness and pain in the joint. Arthritis occurs in different parts of the body, including the back. For elderly people, arthritis is one of the major causes of back pain. Sometimes arthritis can occur in the spine. 

Prevention of Back Pain

Back pain can be prevented by improving your body condition. This can be done by practicing correct body posture and mechanics. You can improve your body condition by:

  1. Exercising

Take on aerobic exercise which will not put strain on your back. Take on walking and jogging. Swimming is also a great exercise for the back. 

  1. Eat healthily

Overweight people often experience back pain as excess weight can cause strain on the back muscles. Eat a balanced diet and take on exercising to reduce weight.


  1. Take on good posture

Avoid slouching at all times. Stand straight, sit properly, and raise your head. All of these can help you avoid back pain.
